Center for American Studies

The head of the American Studies Research Centre is the coordinator of American Studies BA, MA, and PhD programs Prof. Dr. Tamar Shioshvili. Uniqueness of interdisciplinary and the multidisciplinary American Studies field involving a wide scope of humanitarian disciplines encouraged us to open American Studies Research center, designed to explore the U.S. from different angles: American History, American Literature, American Culture & Society, and Multicultural Studies in the U.S, American Women’s Studies, American Media, and American Politics. The center will engage its members in writing articles for the Annual American Studies International Research Conference, held in cooperation with the U.S Embassy in Georgia; prepare articles for the IBSU Scientific Journal; host & cooperate with visiting professors, invited specially for the American Studies department by the U.S. Embassy in Georgia; involve American Studies specialists in projects proposed by the U.S. Embassy.

Center for Mobile Application

The Centre for Mobile Application has been established by the university to build upon taught knowledge of the subject area and foster research into innovative applications, as well as mobile technologies in general. Initially, students will have the opportunity to undertake guided research, where they must choose from a pool of ideas already formulated by the research group. Nevertheless, there is a requirement that guided research involves a significant amount of innovative/novel work. It is envisaged that further research projects will result in publications and contribute to the overall research profile of the university.

To quote from a recent speech by the CEO of EGTB Software Development LLC.

"Georgia needs to accelerate the growth of it's ICT sector so that instead of being merely a sales outpost for mobile technologies from the big multinational companies, it can capitalise on it's low wage costs and well-educated workforce, foster the development of inter-disciplinary technologies to drive efficiencies in it's own economy, and ultimately seek to become a global player in the development and innovation of mobile based technology."


Aims and Activities of the Centre for Mobile Application

Assess the security risks/vulnerabilities with mobile systems/networks/software.

Aid the dissemination of specialist knowledge (i.e. agrarian, health, commodity prices) in the Georgian language.

Research mobile technologies that would support education, particularly primary school education at the critical age.

Research mobile technologies that would support and monitor health.

Research mobile technologies that would provide environmental information.

Research mobile technologies that would provide more cost effective microfinance and monetary transactions.

Research mobile technologies for entertainment and games.

Research and compile data on the Georgian language itself, for the purposes of OCR, speech recognition etc.

Research the use of location data to improve logistics within Georgia.

Managers in global economy must deal with cultural diversity and different perspectives and values. Managers must be trained to acquire the qualities that challenge and alter their belief systems promote decision making and management style flexibility while ensuring that the business rules and regulations found in particular countries are understood and can be applied accurately. Business games, simulations and cases, used both singly and in combination, have the power to bring about such powerful results.

Experiential or active learning teaching technologies place learners into fairly realistic yet psychologically-safe learning situation where they can experiment with new behaviors with immediate, constructive feedback. Within those environment old psycho cultural assumptions can be challenged, perspectives can be broadened and critical reflection is stimulated.

While traditional lectures "can get out the facts" and provoke an enthusiastic response and a good video presentation can exemplify and summarize a particular situation and its accompanying dilemmas, experiential techniques go more to the "soul" of the individual while also insuring greater amount of learning transfer to the job situation.

The mission of the Center is to facilitate cutting edge, data-driven behavioral research to advance the study of complex human decision-making and, therefore, influence innovation in problem solving and business model development.

Students are to attain a greater understanding of employee, manager, and consumer needs and harness their collective insights to make important changes to their businesses.



o   The simulation center is committed to developing specific educational curriculum utilizing a variety of simulation methodologies for education, evaluation, and research purposes.

o   The simulation center is to provide learning experiences that encourage positive inter-professional communication and interaction, problem-solving, decision making, and crisis management.

o   Students participation in simulated business practices is designed to improve performance, reduce errors and promote competent business operations.

o   The simulation experiences is to be facilitated by trained professors and experts employed by Business Simulation Center.

o   The simulation center is to support faculty scholarship as evidenced through publications, abstracts, invited presentations, grant submission and grant funding.

What Does it Involve?

Business Simulation Center is to provide students with a hands-on understanding of economic analysis and business management through business simulation models. Participation requires that students put into practice the tools of economic analysis they have acquired in other courses.

The combination of Business Case Learning (1)method and  Simulated BusinessGames (2), is  not  just designed to “teach” the discipline in traditional manner but, rather encourage students to consider the application of theories and concepts in predesigned and simulated practical business environment.


1. Case Method Learning  

The case learning is very much a mixture of art and skill and the whole process develops through trial and error experience with a realistic review of past experiences.

o   Case method immerses students into realistic business situations.

o   Case provides the reality of managerial decision making which includes incomplete information, time constraints and conflicting goals as students learn how to analyze business situations.

o   The case method packs more experience into each hour of learning than any other instructional approach.

o   The case method learning stimulates students thinking and encourage discussion and most importantly it's also exciting and fun.  

o   Case studies challenge students by bringing them as close as possible to business situations of the real world.

o   Cases spark lively discussion in class and provide management lessons that students can put into practice in their professional lives.


Case Method learning covers vide variety of disciplines including: Accounting, Business & Government relations, Business ethics, Economics, Entrepreneurship, finance, Government management, Human resources, IT, International Business, Marketing, Negotiation, Operational Management, Organizational behavior, Sales, Service management, Social Enterprise and Strategy.


2. Simulations

This part of the practical learning method enables students to apply general management theories and concepts to realistic business situations through the medium of Business simulation games. Students are to be presented with realistic business situations and analyze their behavior in light of psychological and economic models. They also test the complex theories in a controlled environment, gaining critical consumer insights, and examining the completion of interactive tasks.

The single or multi-player simulations place students into variety of roles that explore the excitement of:

o   Starting a new company, student role-play as a founders and potential employees who must deal with the many complexities of negotiating deals, stuffing, budgeting, etc. (Entrepreneurship Simulation)

o   Define and execute a business-to-business marketing strategy or manage and analyze price setting strategies (Marketing Simulations)

o   Immerse in the complex dynamics of corporation and competition where students quickly learn the importance of communications, negotiation and best-response functions (Negotiation Simulation)

o   Explore the complexity of global chain operations and increase the intuition and understanding of core operational concepts such as cycle time, yield, capacity management, etc (Operational Management)

o   Experience the benefit and challenges of using a scorecards to implement strategic initiatives and monitor firm performance (Strategy Simulations)

Center for Big Data Management Technologies

Research Laboratory

From 2015 year at faculty Computer Technologies and Engineering will be opened Research Laboratory.


What is it?

The 'Step into Research' Program is an exciting new initiative by the Computer and Engineer Faculty.

It provides an opportunity for undergraduate and master students who are considering a future career in research to obtain valuable work experience with IBSU staff in a busy research laboratory during several semesters and will be involved into development process with the IBSU staff.

The aim of the scheme is to match students with placement supervisors, who then go on together    to apply for a bursary to support the placement.

The program will run during two semesters and is aimed at students entering their final year at university in 2016.


What does it involve?

Students will spend 1 or 2 semesters in the IBSU Research Laboratory gaining practical laboratory experience.                             

Students will be involved into development of ordered outer or inner projects. For done work (defended project or published article) students will receive credit of 10 points.


What areas of research are available?

Students choose an area of research from the list submitted by placement supervisors (Research Opportunities).

What is the application process for undergraduate work placements?

Students select an area of research of interest to them (a research theme) and submit an application for a work placement to the IBSU Research Laboratory Center by 31 January 2015.

Students with the best applications will be invited to meet with the relevant member(s) of IBSU lecturer staff to discuss possible projects.

Students selected for work placement will then complete an application for a bursary (10 points or grant) in conjunction with their placement supervisor.


Center Activities

On May 11 and 18, 2015 Center for Big Data Management Technologies at Faculty of Computer Technologies and Engineering has organized a 2 days grand seminar in Data Center Room (Academic Building, 3rd floor, room #302).

Center for Teaching Excellence

The Center for Teaching Excellence was created in 2014. Its goal is increasing teaching quality via seminars, workshops and research.

The Vice Rector in Education Prof. Dr. Natela Doghonadze is the head. Professors of the Faculty of Education and Humanities are also involved. 

At the Center consultations on the corresponding questions may be obtained. On faculty requests workshops are held.


In the fall semester of 2014/2015 the following workshops for IBSU professors involved in BA, MA and PhD supervision were held:

1) Supervising a thesis

2) Conducting an experiment in Education Sciences


Also the following workshops for school teachers (mostly from Caglar network) were held:

1) Difficulties of ELT and ways to overcome them
