Information About International Black Sea University
General Information
Founded in 1995, IBSU is a University that has the objective of training Georgian and foreign students in scientific, technical and professional fields of study, and of utilizing these studies in the field of pure and applied research for contributing to the economic and social necessities of Georgia and other developing countries. Since its inception the language of instruction has been English.

LOCATION
International Black Sea University is located in Tbilisi, the capital city of Georgia. Georgia is a small patch of land to the south of the Greater Caucasus Range. It occupies the isthmus between the Black and Caspian Seas. Georgia is bordered from the north by Russia, from the east by Azerbaijan and from the south by Turkey and Armenia. The population of the country is 5 million. People call themselves Kartveli and their country Sakartvelo, i.e. the Georgians’ place.

HISTORY
IBSU was opened by the President of Georgia and the Prime Minister of Turkey in accordance with the decree of the Council of Ministers and the License of Opening given by the Ministry of Education of Georgia in 1995.
The Founders of University were:
the Ministry of Education of Georgia, the Governorship of Dusheti and the Turkish firms Mars and Çağlar. After 2007 Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia and the Governorship of Dusheti are no longer shareholders because of changes in educational law. At the moment Control ltd and Simsek ltd are shareholders of IBSU. The University first shared the building with Demirel College, then moved to another building where it occupied two floors and eventually to its current site with two buildings one administrative and one educational. Building a new campus near Tbilisi airport is starting in summer 2009, which will make the IBSU site adequate to all international requirements.
The first graduation was in 2000 and only 31 students graduated. In 2009 already 160 students graduated, while total number of graduates has reached about 600 students. Above 1,100 students are learning at IBSU currently, among them Bachelor, Master and Doctorate students.
